.......I heard it can be in kind like money, properties (e.g. house) or jewelries......I know it depends on the girl if it is educated and came from a wealthy family, the dowry might have been very big or vice versa or a misconception......Can you shed some light over this issue esp. to those who are involved in this type of culture to clear things out? Does it mean to those who can't afford will be single for life even if he wanted to have his own family?

  1. I don't think anyone realistically can get $50K USD for mahr unless the family is super rich.

I think the figures that Just Me said are common.  People don't openly talk about their mahr, so it's harder to judge than you think.  My sister-in-law accepted 40K from a rich family.  They were prepared to pay more, but she was happy with 40K.  They offered her more, but she declined.

Like Just Me said, if a guy is living at home with his family and he has a job, then it's not hard for him to save the money to get married.  However, I think some of the weddings in KSA are over the top...much more than the dollar amount of the mahr.  The whole wedding could end up costing $50K USD if it's big and fancy, so maybe that's what wolf means rather than just the mahr alone???

Islamically why would anyone want to marry someone who just wants money?  There's much more to life than money.  I'd say most of those people who just want a big number are more concerned with material things than they are with Islam and living a truly happy life.

  2. It depends on the subculture.... so i'll speak about mine...

    50k ( 13,333 US dollars ) would  be a minumum

    70k ( 18.8 k US dollars ) An average "good" dowry

100k  (26.6k US dollars) would be on the high side...

Thats if shes a never married girl....

Sometimes you'd buy her and her mom gifts ( which may be  gold jewlery etc ), and of course theres always the engagement rings gifts etc

If shes divorced or divorced with kids then its much less.. dowry may be 30k ( 8 thousand US ) or so. Same thing if shes over 30.

If you move into a new house theres something called "Nzalah" so relatives would buy stuff for you, a fridge, persian rug, dining tables etc ... Not sure if they do that anymore though...

Theres government interest free loans, agencies that help people get married and so on...

These things arent demanded, as its a shame  to talk about money issues... you just know them....

Rich families are always given no less than 100k, and usually it would be symbolic and they would even return it and make the actual dowry symbolic... you still should offer it though...

The wedding expenses is always on the girls family.

Its not the dowry in itself that prevents some from marriage...

In Saudi people dont move out of their parents home at 18.... like they do in the US or other places, it should be considered shameful to do so...

So it would be the whole package of moving out, paying rent, buying gifts, maybe a new ( or newer ) car, and honeymoon expenses.. it just adds up...

I think it shouldnt be hard for a guy living with his family, not paying any type of rent to provide the minumum dowry...

In some bedwin or southern communities they [sometimes] do let the expected dowry be known, and make it usually high.

Some villages leaders (as I read in the newspaper ) agree to make all dowries for  never married girls, a certain [relatively low] amount, and do the same for divorced ones.

Its worthy to note that in Islam, the less the dowry, the more the blessings. Some religious people make the dowry symbolic, like 1 Riyal ( 25 cents ).

The details differ from area to area and tribe to tribe and so on.

  3. $50,000 USD in Saudi Arabia is the highest amount of money. Why do you think Saudi men are marrying outside the country? Because the women in Saudi Arabia don't want to be in Polygamous relationships. The younger generation is being pampered by servants and don't know how to cook, clean the house, take care of the husband, or raise children.  They are asking for as much as $50,000 USD!  So if you want to marry a girl from Saudi you better have a lot of money and hire a maid to take care of you.

  4. 50 000 rs

  5. No Rules

You can marry a girl for just a piece of silver ring as symbol ( True Islamic)

or put on loads of money to get married in Saudi ( current traditions)...

More families now tend to be more sensible ( especially the educated) .If they like you  , and you happen to have a balanced life, they will allow you to take their daughter " for free""..lol

  6. It is described in the oldest records, such as the Code of Hammurabi as a pre-existing custom, prescribing only regulations for how it was to be handled and also included regulations for a bride price. If a woman died without sons, her husband had to refund the dowry but could deduct the value of the bride price; the dowry would normally have been the larger of the sums. It marks the first record of long-lasting customs, such as the wife being entitled to her dowry at her husband's death as part of her dower, her dowry being inheritable only by her own children, not by her husband's children by other women, and a woman not being entitled to a (subsequent) inheritance if her father had provided her dowry in marriage.
