I WANT IT TO ASCEND IN TWO SECTIONS AS TO REDUCE STEEPNESS; AND JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE EXISTS A UNIVERSAL ANGLE FOR SAFE UPS AND DOWNS.

  1. Maximum is 42 deg for a domestic stair, 38 for any other, although shallower is preferred for large public stairs or where disabled might be using them.

  2. Although there is a range of angles at which stairs can be built, which would take into consideration things like available space constraints, the closest to a perfect rise and run for stair design is a 7 1/4" rise to an 11 1/4" run, which works out to roughly a 33 degree incline.

Staircase design is usually discussed in terms of the rise and run of an individual step and it is the size of the actual step a person must take that is important when calculating a comfortable and safe ascent and descent on a staircase.

In general, you can use the thumbnail guide of adding rise and run to total 18", more or less, to determine the step. A rise of less than 6" inches feels awkward. A tread length, or run, of more than 12" inches is generally awkward.

Anything more than 45 degrees in incline is considered a ladder and not a staircase, by building codes.

Staircase design is one of the trickier and more complex aspects of house carpentry and should not be taken lightly. Adding a landing, to interrupt a long run of stairs, can be nice. There are all kinds of ways to treat this, too. With a 1/4 turn, or even a 180 degree turn. Adding a landing and a turn takes up a little more space, but may also help if you don't have the room for a single, long run of stairs.

  3. Safety for stairs is the rule of 18. The total of the rise of the step plus the run of the tread should equal 18. Example: you have a rise of 71/2 inches, the tread should be 101/2 inches. on a stairway these should all be as nearly the same as possible. If alot of floor space is available shorten the rise and extend the run a bit. Ex: 6 3/4 in. rise and a 11 1/4 in. run. Both examples total 18.

  4. Not every stair is the same but most are with in 6-7.5 inch rise to 10-12 inch steps.
