Im JUST starting to design my first 'real' website. Im designing the intro page and wondering if someone could tell me the standard size of a web browser? I want to create a full page image in photoshop, and dont know what pixel x pixel to make it. (or inches, or cm). I would really appreciate the help!

PS: I will be using photoshop to design and dreamweaver to create, if that helps any.

  1. The standard used to be 800x600.  However, it has recently been changed to 1024 x 780

  2. 1024 x 768 is far more common than 800x600.

  3. 800*600

  4. Yes, 800x600 means pixels. According to web statistics, lots more people use 1024x768 as their monitor resolution than 800x600, with smaller numbers using progressively higher resolutions, but the trend is for higher resolutions to become more popular over time so the standard changes over time.

  5. I run a website and my visitor statistics show that 80% of the people have their screen resolution set to either 800 x 600 pixels, or 1024 x 768 pixels. The split between them is almost equal, so I would choose the smaller size (800 x 600 pixels) to avoid forcing the other half to scroll horizontally.

Now you have to take few other factors into consideration also, like the size of the margin frames on people's browsers. Just because they have their resolution set to 800 pixels across does not mean that you can put up an 800 pixel graphic. I would set the maximum width of the graphic to be 770 pixels.

And it's not a question of one resolution being more popular than another. You have to look at what percentage of your total visitors have a resolution LESS than 1024 x 768. If 30% of all visitors have 800 x 600 or less, then you'll just anger one third of your visitors if you code your site to a higher res.
