I am thinking of purchasing a turtle, and a website says it needs at least a 40 gallon tank. Is there a standard size for that size of a tank? I have limited space, so I need to know. Does anyone else own a turtle and have a different opinion?

  2. Unless you're getting something like a Leaf turtle or Speckled Padloper, I don't know of any water turtle which can live its life in a 40 gal. tank.  The rule of thumb is 10 gal. of water per inch of turtle shell length.  So, if you're talking a RES; it can get 10"-12" as an adult female, and require a 100-120 gal. tank.

It would help if you told us what kind of turtle you are purchasing.

Good luck, and enjoy your new pet.

  3. Approximately 40 gallons worth of size.
