  1. Adding to what user Fred said;

    It was that place, around 2,200 B.C., with the Hsia Dynasty, the first, historically reliable ruling dynasty of China.  There is the story of the yellow emperor, who is said to have ruled in the year 4,000 B.C., but even among Chinese historians themselves he's a myth.

    The first historically reliable dynasty of what would eventually become China, was indeed a small kingdom in the yellow river valley called the Hsia.  Southern China was actually a separate civilization until they were conquered by the Han hundreds of years later.  The reason Cantonese is different from Mandarin, is because the area of what is now Canton was a separate kingdom outright before the Han conquest, and therefore, they had a separate language closer actually to the dialects spoken in Thailand, Burma and Vietnam, than the Mandarin spoken by the Chinese.

    If you want a reliable, a name that can be confirmed from you checking an encyclopedia, the true origin of Chinese civilization, began with the Hsia Kingdom, which was actually really small, an area barely larger than modern south Korea.

  2. Necessity, in a language you couldn't understand.

  3. Some 3,500 years ago, in the Yellow River valley.

  4. xin dynasty

  5. China gradually evolved as an agricultural society some 10,000 years ago...

  6. This is a good opportunity to bring up the flood and boat tale, which exits in every culture worldwide. The story changes a little, but everyone has a great flood,a boat and very few survivors. The story is even revealed in Japanese writing characters. During the ice age, (after a great flood?) the boat containing a man, his wife and his sons(and their wives) came to rest on a mountain top in what we now call Russia. The ice moving Southward caused the migration of these survivors. One of them ended up in China. Shem, Ham or Japheth? Check it out on a map.
