It was chosen because it is native to all parts of the state and because it "...is a singer of distinctive type, a fighter for the protection of his home, falling if need be, in its defense, like any true Texan"  --Texas Federation of Woman's Clubs (they suggested the bird)

The mockingbird is the state bird of Texas, but personally I think the Roadrunner should be. lol
