Question:

What is the statute of limitations on unpaid (or partially paid) speeding tickets (in Mississippi)?

About 7 years ago (might be 8) I got a speeding ticket in MS, on the interstate. I called the city, they told me the amount, which I paid.

I now lost my records (bank statements, cancelled checks), with Hurricane Katrina.

Now, a collection agency in MS is harassing me weekly that I owe a small portion of "unpaid ticket fine" - they claim that the amount was not correct, it was more. They claim to be the "collection agency" for that city. I do not believe them (I paid what the city told me), and this "agency" would not talk to me; whenever I dispute they hang up.

People have told me that it could be a scam, to get my credit card or bank account number.

What is the statute of limitations on partially paid speeding tickets?

  1. Under the FDCPA, a collector is required to tell you what agency they work for and all contact info. Call the city and see what agency they use. A statute of limitations varies from one state to the next, and unfortunately i dont know mississippi's. But call the city to verify before you give out any info.

  2. 7 years I think.

  3. There is no SoL on payments.  But if you paid what the city asked you, then this is probably a scam.  Ask them for the full details of who they work for and what they are asking for payment for.  If you don't get a satisfactory answer, don't pay.
