What is the stigma with rubbing beer on a baby's gums?

It is a centuries old remedy for teething children that was done to me. And I was given 1-2 oz. of beer when I was hyperactive. Nobody wants their child to be alcoholic; however, considering all the dangerous drugs with side effects. Is this route considerably better?

whiskey,not beer for TEETHING not behavior!,sorry to break it to the orajel freaks but chemicals can harm your child! and people have been using natural remedies like whiskey for hundreds of years,no one is advising anyone to pour booze down a babys throat,thats idiotic but rubbing a small amount on the gums will help both you and the kid sleep

medicating children whith chemicals that have long term detrimental results is the real insanity

I doubt this would make your kid an alcoholic. I have heard of this but it should have been done only rarely.

never heard of beer.....have other liquors, but never beer.  and NO...it is not a good idea to give even a few ounces of beer to a baby...their livers cannot handle it yet.  just stick to orajel for teething...and if your child is overly "hyper" suck it up and dole out the meds if medically necessary and get on a good schedule....it will help to keep a consistent schedule and your child have less of a tendency to become antsy.

I thought it was whiskey on a baby's gums.  

Either way, it's much better than orajel, which contains benzocaine(similar to cocaine).  Now THAT'S ridiculous!

Some people don't like the fact that the alcohol could affect your baby's development. I honestly wouldn't want to mess up my baby. I don't know where you got the impression of giving your baby meds when your baby is just teething. Just get him/her some gel or either a bitting toy to naw on while he or she is teething. its easier that way.

I dont think it is a good idea. Why? Because parents can get tempted to put alcohol in a babys bottle to put them to sleep and I believe this practice of rubbing alcohol on a babys gums leads to this..

Yrs ago a person could get a medicine called paragoric for teething my mother inlaw said, when I needed something for my sons teething, 22 yrs. ago, she rubbed a little whiskey on his gums, he is a wonderful 23 now, smart, great job, full of life, no problems. Granted this only happened twice, if anything would have happened to him, I would have blamed my X mother in law-notice I said SHE rubbed the gums-not I.

It's not advised because you can easily over-dose a baby on alcohol. Making the baby an alcoholic isn't the side-effect, by giving a baby alcohol, you can actually kill it or give it alcohol poisoning. And you do not want to have to take your child to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, because it'll definately be taken away.
