  1. Stippling is using dots (sometimes dashes) to construct an image. The entire picture is made up of the dots, and dark/light areas are created according to the distance between the dots. For example, dots that are closer together create shadows, and dots that are farther apart create light because they let more white of the paper through! : )

  2. For some examples of stippling, check out this old website:

In the "Commercial Illustration" section, scroll down to "Cat" and "Fish."  In the "Fantasy and Science Fiction" section, see "B Troop."

In these examples, there are NO solid lines in any part of the image.  The "edges" are, simply, a greater conctntration of dots, unlike the examples from the first answer.  In those, only the shading effects are stippled.

  3. Just google it. . . you will get all the answers you need!  It looks like this:  http://bmia.bmt.tue.nl/Research/MVIAV/IV...

Stippling is creating values by making tiny dots. . . closer for dark values, and farther apart for lighter values.  It is a technique often used in pen and ink.  [It is NOT the same as pointillism, which is the use of tiny dots or strokes of pure colors placed close together so the eye will mix them visually from a distance.]
