I have small clumps of white cotton like stuff growing at the base of artificial plants and in the corners of the aquarium. I have managed this tank for 25 years and one fish is over 15 years old. I thought it might be a form of algae but it does not respond to algae formulas. help

  1. It sounds like a fungus to me. Have you changed anything in the tank lately? It could also be old tank syndrome.

I wonder if maybe some food or a dead fish has gone unnoticed?

  2. I agree that it's likely fungus.  Any food or waste left in the tank will decompose and eventually fungus.  Instead of tossing in chemicals (which will likely damage the biofilter and stress the fish), more frequent water changes with a gravel vacuum are in order.

try and find a fungicide for plants, but make sure its safe for the fishies!
