  1. AFAIK there is no seperate theory of human evolution it obeys the same principal as evolutionary theory.  Evolutionay theory was actually created to explain observed patterns in the animal world, it was observed that various animals shared similar charastics and would be able to interbreed with certain other animals and produce viable offspring. This led to the idea of the common ancestor or original template from which a species changed to adapt to various conditions. Humans are not a unique life form biologically thus the theory of a common ancestor was extended, anthropological discoveries and DNA testing has added more weight to this idea.

  2. Firstly, we should state that the scientific community refers to widely accepted facts with overwhelming evidence as theories; and untested theories are called hypotheses. Thus, evolution is considered to be scientific fact. The theory of evolution has also evolved since first proposed by Darwin (and Lamarck!). In its current state, there are no notable weaknesses in the theory--other than that it is often misunderstood. Darwin never said that man evolved from apes or monkeys. That is a slander spread by Evangelical Christian groups that see evolution as a threat to their belief in creationism. Specifically, the fossil record disproves the sequence of creation as written in the Bible (Genesis). In fact evolution, if properly understood, provides an excellent picture of how life developed on Earth. Its strengths are many, as it is one of the most important discoveries in the history of mankind. Evolution takes millions of years to witness the physical changes, as they are not evident from one generation to the next. Creationists often complain that there are no intermediary steps in the fossil record. This is incorrect. Everything is an intermediary step, as each creature is the stage between the species that it evolved from and the species yet to evolve from it. Enjoy learning about the science of evolution!
