What is the structure called in a plant cell that allows for the plant to survive freezing winters?

and how does it work? Im supposed to be designing a freshwater pond plant for bio as part of my final but we have specific limitations.my plant lives in the shallow part of a freshwater pondin an area that receives 75-110 cm rain, mostly at the transition between seasons,in soil low in oxygen(?) and in water temp from 32*F-70*F. Help?

  1. This is actually a tough question but I'll take my chances. The answer to this question is not an specific part of a plant but the plant itself. In temperate countries there are 4 seasons and thus for a plant to survive it must do a way to adapt to the temperature change. The process actually is ACCLIMATIZATION. This is a physiological response of the plant to cope up with the variation in temperature. As soon as the plant senses that there would be a change in temperature it produces substances that will help it survive. However this does not apply to gradual temp changes.
