  1. In the NE U.S., we figure on 8'. That provides a pocket of water safe from freezing and usually retains enough oxygen to avoid winter-kill. Farther south, freezing is not a problem but lack of oxygen is. You need a pond deep enough that the lower reaches, at least, will be cool and have sufficient oxygen. Oxygen requirements vary with the species of fishes you are raising. You can raise tilapia in a wading pool; brook trout require deep cold ponds. It is not a simple matter. Even after having worked as a fishery biologist, I plan on contacting a county agent for advice if I ever move to a place where I can have a pond.

  2. between two and three feet...unless you are raising whales...then I'd go a bit deeper....(think about it)

  3. Completely depends on where you are, what breed/s of fish, and what your winters are like.

If you have winters where you get freezing weather, and ice on ponds, your pond should be at least 8 feet deep.

About a 1/4 acre pond on our farm, thriving with fish

  4. I would say that largely depends on the type of fish. Water temperatures, clarity, and many other factors are affected by depth. Different species thrive in different water factors. Perhaps if you supplied us with the species you wish to farm we could help you more.
