  1. PS3Fan really wants to be sure.... 60 times sure.

2 taxes in Montreal. The first is federal tax called GST which is 5%.

The second tax is added to the first, called QST (for Quebec Sales Tax) is a provincial tax in the amount of 6.5%.

The combined rate is 11.825%, because the second is calculated on top of the first.

It applies to most all goods and services, most retail prices are quoted excluding taxes. Exceptions are groceries, medical services, and books are excluded from QST but not GST.

  2. That's right!

    SteveN got it in one!

    Need I say more?

P.S. A bloody ripoff if you ask me, lol! Oh well...

  3. There are two taxes in Montreal that you would pay on most items purchased that are not considered necessities.

So for example, if I bought a Sony PS3 in the local Futureshop or Best Buy Canada, I would pay:

    1) The cost of the 40gb PS3 ($399.99)

    2) The Federal Goods & Services tax (5%) called GST

    3) The Provincial sales tax (7.5%)

The "interesting" way that Quebec collects its provincial tax is that it includes the GST in the calculation. Essentially, they are taxing the federal tax you had to pay!

So a $399.99 Playstation 3 at Futureshop would cost you CAD$451.49 when taxes are added.

Note that if you are ordering it for delivery, you can expect to pay shipping charges too, and if sending to USA, there may be a duty fee that has to be paid.
