I am looking at a red roan yearling, but I have never owned a red roan before. I just want to know what they are like as far as working and riding, and about how tall they can get. Thanks.

  1. Whats the tempermant of a cheasnut and a gray add those together and thats what kind of tempermant the horse will have. DUH

all horses are different one QH to the next is different. So no one can tell you in less they have seen the horse and know it.

i would ask the owner in sure they could tell you.

  2. A roan is just a color that's like asking what the temperament of a chestnut is or a bay is. That's just a color...not a breed.

If you didn't know this I feel you aren't ready to own a horse yet. You should know more about horses, breeds and such before you buy a horse.

If you're planning on buying a horse think about care, like they need to be bathed, and it's not like a person there's a certain place to start with the hose. You also need to know about the breed of the horse your buying.

If you want to know the temperment you should look into how often they're riden, if they've even ever been riden, how much they eat, how often they pasture, and their shire and dam.....not the color. To find a general temperment you should look at the breed, such as an Appaloosa tends to be stubborn and a thourobred tends to have a good stamina and is fast.

LASTLY  a color of a horse has nothing to do with a horse, there used to be a black horse at my stables, he was as calm and relaxed as it gets. There's also a black horse there now and she's pretty crazy and flips out over little things. There's nothing about the color that changes a horse's personality and temperment.

  3. They tend to be more philosophical than blue roans, especially if they were born under a full moon.  Never ask them for favors on a Tueday...as everyone here surely knows, red roans are notoriously unhelpful on Tuesdays (and Thursdays, too, if it happens to be during the winter months).

Not really though.  As everyone else said, roan is a color, not a breed.  You can't tell a thing about temperment, size, workability, or anything else based on it.

  4. Red Roans come in all sorts of breeds so temperment depends upon the breed, NOT the colour.  Red Roan is a COLOUR.

You can find red roan Arabs, Quarter Horses, Paints, Appys, Belgiums even Thoroughbreds.  Same goes with size on a red roan, anything from a Shetland Pony all the way to a Belgium.

BTW, you gotta quit listening to Mary Robbin's "Roan" song!  Now that will be going through my head all danged day long!  ROFLOL

  5. I've always heard that roans are sorta crabby but I think that's a wives tale it's more about breeding and training than color. Look at the temperament of the sire and dam to really know more about your colt.

  6. "Red roan" is a color, not a breed or type of horse.  The color of a horse plays no role in its temperament.  In order to know what you are dealing with in this yearling (temperament, height, etc.), you need to know what it's breeding is, how it has been handled, if it has had any training with groundwork, etc.

  7. What in the world are you talking about?  That is like asking, "How do blue cars drive?".  It is not the color of the horse that matters.  Red roan is a color not a breed.  Even if it were a breed you still need to judge by the individual horse.

  8. I have a red roan appy and he is the best horse ever. He has a puppy dog personality. Color really doesnt mean anything on personality though.

  9. Colour has really nothing to do with temperment. Although as an old tale of standardbreds "chestnuts are nuts". And yes I have seen true to this statement. Chestnuts in standardbred are pretty rare so im going to assuming it has to do with breeding lines.

What breed is this red roan yearling? Perhaps then we can offer more adequate help to your question?

  10. Red Roans are horrible horses! They eat a lot, p**p a lot, and just all around suck, basically.

I'm kidding. But, Red Roan is a COLOUR, not a breed. If you don't know this going in, then you're obviously not equipped for horse ownership at the moment. Sorry.

Red Roans grow up to 18.4 hh at least!!!
