  1. I would say land-locked, or stranded on a sandbar.  land challenged..

  2. beached

  3. There are a couple terms that come to mind that have yet to be mentioned.

    1.  He has swallowed the anchor, meaning that he will not be returning to sea.

    2.  CLOD, this is an acronym referring to ex cruising sailors.  Cruiser Living On Dirt.

  4. "On the beach" or "beached", If he has given up the sea he has "swallowed the anchor."

  5. Shipless>

  6. sand crab is used in the shipyards.  Something you would normally think is at sea, but is stuck on the beach...

land-lubber may be the term you are searching for, also.

  7. Marooned if he is stuck unvolunteerily.

  8. If he is really stuck on land then he is an ex-sailor. Otherwise there should be a reason that keeps him busy ashore, like a work related to his profession (i.e. a captain that became superintendent in a shipping company). He would then be 'shore-based' or 'working ashore'.

If he has no business ashore that connects to his profession as sailor, he may still carry earned titles and some will refer to themselves as sailors until they die - even if they may never step on a ship again

  9. you may be thinking of marooned......a sailor either shipwrecked or abandoned by his shipmates and left alone , usually on an island....

used in a sentence: A ship carrying red paint hit a ship carrying blue paint and now both crews are marooned.
