  2. A nipple is usually like a threaded pipe, you use it (for example) to connect two hoses together with the same thread and size. . An adapter has different threads, sizes and/or type of fitting on each end.

    Examples

    You would use a nipple to connect two 3/8 flare type hoses and you would use an adapter to connect a 3/8 flare fitting to a 1/2 inch pipe thread..
