  1. well, a lot goes on in the novel but if the underlying theme throughout it all is the desire to change oneself. Buffalo Bill's desire to be a woman, the moth's metamorphoses, Clarice trying to distance herself from her roots. Lecter is the complete opposite. Rather than try to change his behavior he embraces who he is.
