  1. The theme is honesty. If the lady had confessed that she broke the string and lost the pearls but would repay them,her friend would have told her, "don't worry. they are only fake anyway. Don't worry about it. But how many years of working drudgery did she have to endure.? twenty?

    A story with a similar theme is contained in the Moscow Papyrus, a three thousand years old Ancient Egyptian story.

  4. All I remember is the irony--they believed they were real pearls and it turns out they were fakes...I'm sure there's some symbolism in there but last I read it I was either in Jr. High or High School(been quite a while).
