What is the thin, almost invisible wire that i see running along the street side of 6th Avenue in Manhattan?

You could try and see who is working on or around it. Like a phone company van or something like that. But my guess is that it is either phone or Internet

For above the best way to find out who's it is is to cut it. Then see who comes to fix it and you have your answer. lol

Since all of the utilities are buried along 6th Ave you should just follow the "wire" to see where it goes.  It has to be attached to something, or it doesn't do anything at all.
