What is the thing called that allowes you to plug a house hold item into a cigarette plugin(in a car)?

it is most of the time called an electrical converter box. But you should know that it has its limitations. it will only convert to so much wattage. And you should never use and item that exceeds that stated wattage. And auto warrantees do not cover any damage  caused by them.

However you shoud also know that the ''cigarrette '' lighter accessory is protected by a 15 amp fuse to protect the cars wiring and electronics.

You want an inverter. This wires into your cars power system and alters it to normal home current.

But you have to do the math of what you plan on running compared to what your car puts out and what size inverter you need.

If its just a laptop or like a boombox, a normal size one is fine. But if you want to run a blender, a electric drill or such, then you will have to go to a larger one (normally $500+).

If unsure in the math, there are formula's online and with the inverters at times. Otherwise walk into a Radio Shack and one of them should be able to help you.
