  1. The transcontinental railroad was the railroad built during James Polk's presidency following the Gold Rush is California.  Since so many people lived on the pacific shore at this time, Chinese workers were shipped into the US and they built a railroad from New England to San Francisco in about 6 years.  In short, it was a railroad that connected the west coast to the east coast.

  2. The Transcontinental Railroad was established by Abraham Lincoln.  Its purpose was to link the West [i.e., California] with the rest of the nation.

Two railroads were tasked with building it -- The Central Pacific, who was to build from San Francisco west, and the Union Pacific, who was to build from Omaha, Nebraska.

On May 10, 1869, the dream came a reality at Promontory, Utah, with the driving of the "Golden Spike".   With this, there was a continuous rail line [albeit different rail companies] from the east coast to the west coast.

This is what the "Transcontinental Railroad' means.  Of course, this is just a brief version.

  3. The person above is correct.  A railroad that runs the width of the continent, Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast
