What is the transome on a boat??

looking to buy a boat and the transome needs repair what is a transome?

The transom is basically the flat or curved surface that forms the stern (back end) of a ship or boat.

On most motor boats, the transom serves as the mount for the outboard motor. In that case, the power from the motor is absorbed by the transom and transmitted through the rest of the boat. You either want a boat with a sturdy transom, or no boat at all.

THE TRANSOM IS THE BOARD THAT HOLDS THE OUT BOARD ON OR THE BACK OF A BOAT PERIOD.  DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME REPAIRING A BOAT. TOOOO MANY BOATS FOR SALE TO MESS WITH FIXING ONE.

Yep...I almost bought a boat with a soft transome. Thought it would be easy to fix....took a look and there was more damage than just transome. If you think you can fix it...great...but make sure the lower unit on the motor is still good. Most of the time when the boat has a bad transome...it's out of the water for years and the lower unit freezes up....it cost almost as much as buying another motor.

everyone described a transom accurately, however  depending on the boat,  transoms are expensive to replace, (if you do not do it yourself), so be careful

Unless you age going to complete this project yourself. I would steer clear of this one. If the transom has rot, you can bet the rear floor, stringers and possibly the core has rot.

In order to replace the transom  you have to separate the fiberglass from the rotted wood. There are a few ways to do this. 1, is to cut the outer skin off the back of the boat, dig out all the rotted wood. Then using the inner fiberglass skin as a guide install new sealed wood, then glass the rear skin back on. This is a bit faster, but not recommended. The other way is to un-rig the boat, and separate the top and bottom halves of the boat. This will give you access to the transom.  It is a very labor intensive project.
