What is the true meaning behind the title "The Office"?

It is titled simply because it is a satire that's supposed to be taken literally, like a real documentary. The Office is a conceptual story resolved in 14 episodes. Ricky Gervais, the creator and actor of the boss throughout the original UK series, said that the show was meant to have a finite plot and could not continue after its resolution. The American series is not as cohesive and rambles for entertainment purposes.
