  2. Traditionally the various tribes of a nation only came together at certain times of the year.

It was a time to socialize with old friends, make new friends, hear the news and event that had taken place since they last saw one another.

The young people would likely meet a person who would be their future wife or husband. The elders would pass on their knowledge through stories. And they would sing and dance.

In the late 1800s to the early 1900s all Native American cultural practices were outlawed by the government. As a result, any gathering of  the people was in secret.

When the law changed and Native American practices were no longer illegal, the Nations began to revive their cultural practices. Gatherings were small scale and only held in a few places.

By the late 1900s more tribes began to host gatherings. At the same time there was also an increase in the contact between the different Native American Nations.

In the west, Non-Native people were engaging in rodeos. Some Native American Nations in that area began to host dance "competition" pow wows. Competition was a means for their young people to excel and compete in a cultural activity.

It was a practice that quickly spread over the entire continent and effectively spread the revival of traditional practices to every tribe and Nation.

Shortly a concern arose, that "competition" was not a traditional value among Native Americans.  Due to that concern, many tribes abandoned the practice of "competition" in their pow wows.

So today there are still many competition pow wows, but there are probably far more "traditional' gatherings or pow wows.

Today, the participants no longer just from one Nation, the participants are from many Nations. What you seeing today is a sharing of the various Native American cultures, songs and dances.
