Aspirin started out as a commercial name for a product developed by the German drug company Bayer which, despite its own name, isn't based in Bayern (Bavaria).  It's a legally registered product name.  The name came from an abbreviation of A (for acetyl) and spir (for 'Spirstaude' = meadowsweet in English).  That plant's the source of an oil.
