Question:

What is the truth about "outdated freon" systems in remodeling?

I received three bids each one less money for labor to place ductwork in my attic, a small air handler up there, and a used 4 ton condensor outside on a slab. The ductwork would be installed around the perimeter of the kneewalls of the attic allowing me open space for a master bed/bath up there, and a "clean" ductless flow thru the ceiling down to the first floor, saving much ceiling space and demolishing. BUT! A 4th system man told me the system was being sold to me without regard for the FACT that the freon R22? would be a problem, and that I would get ripped off shortly after the first year, when my system "leaked" and the service calls for freon would exceed approx. $500. What is the truth with newer style freon sytems? Albeit more expensive???

  1. He is telling the truth and in fact after february 2010 it will be totally illegal for even an ac man to posses, much less use r22 freon anymore..do not buy a new unit that will use this..they are converting to r410a a..and r22 will ..actually already is outlawed after the date..alot of ac sellers are trying to "push" thier r22 systems on the market at a cheap price to get rid of them before they are stuck with them..
