  1. The boreal habitat is dominated by cold tolerant conifer species but there are many conifers found growing in the tropics also. Fiji island group has 10 gymnosperm species including the endemics Podocarpus affinis, Acmophyle sahniana, and Dacrydium nausoriense that are remnants from the ancient Gondwanaland Ur-continent.  http://www.worldwildlife.org/wildworld/p...

The circumpolar Canadian and Siberian arctic regions that were once temperate in climate grew conifers, such as the Metasequoia and pine trees.  The ice ages moved the trees south and isolated their populations. The coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) survived in North America while the Metasequoia survived only in China. Pine and spruce have very wide ranges still as they are boreal forest residents. The Ice Ages expanded their range.

In phylogenics cycads and gingkos are included in the gymnosperm. They share wood development patterns and seed modes but are not closely related. Cycads survive to this day as tropical as some 200 species much as they were in the carboniferous era. Ginkgo biloba is the only surviving species in the ginkophyta genus.
