The capital letters are "U" "S" and "A" for United States of America.

  6. Washington DC

  7. The Capital was and is the District of Columbia.   (Article I of the Constitution of the USA,  Section 8...#17....)

Within the district was the City of Washington with an independent governing body.   The two governing bodies were merged together in 1790,  essentially becoming one entity.

So for all intents and purposes,  Washington DC is correct however the authority to BE the capital lays with the "district" and not with the "city."    If the city were to disappear,  the district would remain the capital.
