What is the usb port on the direct tv dvr for?

If you can use it, can you plug a say a jump drive into it and move the shows that you have recored onto it? Then can you play it on your computer?

  1. Not sure I understand your question, but most DVD recorders have an IEE1394 fire-wire port (mini usb type) to allow you to connect a digital video camera.

    It gives you a fast (very fast) data transfer from camera to DVD recorder.  It's only one way though (input only) and is a data transfer port, so you couldn't play back your camera's video clips through it. You'd need to upload the clips to your DVD recorder's hard drive first, and view it from there.

    If your recorder is DivX compliant, you might be able to upload a DivX movie from your computer onto your DVD recorder via the fire-wire port, but remember, you only have a limited number of playbacks with DivX, and remember also, you need to register your DVD recorder's DivX serial No before you can play back any DivX video.

    I can't just recall the website for DivX registration, but I will try to find out for you, just in case!
