Anyone any idea what the use would be for such a high resolution? Has it many advantages? I am about to buy a new camera and I want to know it it's worthwhile investing in a digital photo camera of 10 or 12 Megapixel.

  1. If you keep the photos small, then you probably wont notice a difference. But if you decide to make an A4 or A3 size copy of a photo so that you can frame it and hang it on your wall then the quality will look just as good huge as it does when it's small, unlike lower Megapixel camera's which will look washed out, faded and blurry.

  2. For an average user, 10 or 12 MP doesn't make any difference. If you are printing 4x6 or 5x7, you will not see any difference between 4 MP and 40 MP! Mega pixels do not impact colors, contrast and etc. Mega Pixels come to play only when you want to print larger photos. More mega pixels is also good for cropping in photoshop. You you will get better pictures after cropping. For instance, you can select part of a picture, like a person and blow it out and romve everything else from the picture and get a 4x6 or 5x7 print of that person. If you have more mega pixels, you can even blow out the subject more and get a 8x10 or even larger print without loosing any quality!

(Cropping refers to the removal of the outer parts of an image to improve framing,  accentuate subject matter or change aspect ratio)

  3. For normal++ use the megapixels don't mean "anything". It is much more more important which kind of optics is used in the camera.

I rather buy a 8 megapixels camera with good optics than 12 megapixels which bad optics!

  4. It's all a rip off, unless your a professional photographer and likely to know the difference

  5. It definitely is the more mega pixels the better quality and more colors it well pick up go for the high quality you well be happy

  6. My ex said 2 years ago Bob I want a camera with a lot of mm mega, mega something; I don't know what they are but I want plenty of it.

I told her don't let any salesman talk you into buy a Kodak. What she bought, a Kodak that salesperson suggested. It lasted 1 year.

Sooo, unless you plan to enlarge more than 11X14, or do a lot of cropping(blowing up a portion of a photo), you won't need a 10 or 12 megapixel camera. My daughter gets excellent 8X10s from her 5 MP Fuji and very acceptable 11X14 photos.

As Elvis said 8 is plenty, 6 or 7 is just fine.

Do not get caught up in the megapixel hype.

  7. 8 mp is plenty

the higher mp is for huge enlargements or cropping
