What is the use of a 32 bit micro processor on a ship?

what is the use of a 32 bit micro processor on a ship?.....particularly on a merchant vessel(i.e. tankers, bulk carriers, container vessels,etc.)

A simple question with a huge answer, larger than this forum can handle.

What doesn't have a processor, 32 bit or otherwise?  Certainly all communication, navigation, power plant monitoring, trim stabilizers, lighting, fire protection and work scheduling systems all utilize micro-processing electronics.  I'm sure there are lots of others around a merchant vessel that a merchant seaman could point to.
