  1. To store electrical energy in the form of a magnetic field.  To create an electromagnetic field around the inductor to be used in relays and solenoids.

    To provide resistance dependant on frequency, in a circuit.  This allows for the construction of filters for signals to filter out unwanted frequency components of those signals.
