  1. My dad's a nephrologist (kidney doctor) so i guess i should know...Well, on dialysis, when peoples' kidneys don't work well, they need a seperate machine to clean out the blood and return it with the proper amounts of potassium, and other chemicals. Usually, your kidneys can clean your blood by filtering, and then passing on the unnecessary particles to your bladder. Dialysis can only work for so long, though. After a while, your kidneys can reach the point of destruction and dialysis isn't enough to work; you need a transplant. If this doesn't help, here's a website I found that look informative: http://health.howstuffworks.com/kidney.h...
