It tests whether a solution is alkaline or acidic. eg: if you put the tip of a strip of yellow litmus in your mouth so that your saliva wets it you can see whether your body is acidic or alkaline. If it stays yellow, you're acidic. Blue or darker and you're alkaline...which is the healthier one of the two.
