I come across 6 yr olds who still can't add. Just curious. How about spelling and constructing simple sentences? Thanks!

  1. Kindergarten to first grade?

  2. 1st grade is simple addition

second is longer addition and subtraction

thrid grade is multiplication and division

fourth grade is long multiplication and long division

fifth grade is mostly word problems

then we get into more algebraic problems

The ages/levels have been consistent for over 20 years.

For spelling, kids start having weekly spelling tests in 1st grade with words like cat, sat, fat ...  you get the point.  A lot of rhyming...  There are usually 10 spelling words per week.  Then 20 from 2nd grade to 5th grade.  After that, spelling is part of their English classes and not so structured.

Grammar starts in kindergarten, but they only touch on it.  The point of kindergarten is just to teach the kids to sit in their seats, be polite and follow instructions.  Plus make sure that they know their letters, numbers, colors...

  3. Trixie is partly correct.  Kindergarten is the new first grade. Basic addition is taught in kindergarten. I don't think that they go past 10 in their sums.  I know that they learn simple sight word and some simple phonetic spellings as well as constructing simple sentences.  I'm amazed as I walk down the kindergarten hallway in May and see the writing they do.
