  1. It requires less fuel to transport the produce to market. The amount of fuel used by private cars is not large compared to the amount used by trucks carrying EVERYTHING that you buy at the store, including food grown hundreds or even thousands of miles away. People make such a big fuss about SUVs being wasteful but you never hear a peep about all those big trucks crossing the country all the time.

  2. I believe the world works in a circle(what goes around, comes back around). Purchasing local produces puts money back into where you live which eventually puts money in pocket. I'm a strong believer in karma. Whatever business you into, one way or another  what you give will figure out its way to come back to you.

  3. Sustainable farming within the region means less shipping. Due to this, the need for specialized and 'treated' foods which have been sprayed with pesticides, etc. would lessen. Additionally, with less shipping you get less emissions which is also better for the environment. With locally grown foods, local authorities have direct access to inspect the process and product. Distribution does suffer, as often, smaller producers can't distribute with the same precision as larger networks. It also means a sacrifice of some diversity in diet. It would be virtually impossible to get a pineapple field started in Nova Scotia Canada, or a maple syrup distillery  going on the equator. (That last one might not have been a great example as some trees can grow in extreme heat. - but you get the idea!)

  4. Buying locally means you know how your food is grown or treated. You can see a label that says grass fed or free range but you don't know how the company defines that. You know how "organic" your products really are and you are supporting the "little guy" who is far more likely to be looking out for you then a big corporation.
