What is the value of gravitational acceleration 'g' in vacuum?

I know that value of 'g' on earth is 9.8 but is it the same in vacuum?

  1. No. The gravity on earth comes from planet earth. In a vacuum, the gravity would be much diminished because you are far from any large masses. The closer you get to any mass, the more gravitational pull you would feel from it. It depends where you are in a vacuum. If you took a space shuttle and jumped out, you would feel a pull from the earth, but it would be much smaller. Maybe your close enough to the moon to feel a pull from that too. So it depends where in a vacuum you are. If you were somehow in a vacuum right here on earth, you would still feel the same value of "g".

On the surface of Earth, the acceleration due to gravity is about 9.81 m / s^2.  If the object is placed inside a sealed container and the air is pumped out (aka, a vacuum), the acceleration will still be 9.81 m / s^2 as long as you are still on the surface of earth.  So yes, it is still the same in a vacuum on earth.

    Outer space is a vacuum, so some people are assuming that by "in a vacuum" you mean outer space.  If you do mean in outer space, then the acceleration due to gravity would depend on the distance from large masses such as planets.
