What is the value of the American dollar in Paris? Is it expensive to dine and shop there?

The dollar does not go very far, currently 1.4 dollars equals 1 euro. I went to Paris a few months ago and found the shopping to be very expensive. Dining was pretty reasonable, a lot of restaurants had prix fix menus, which offered a better value for your money.

I don't think its very expensive usually you can dine in brasseries for a set menu at 15-25€. Shopping is expensive in tourist areas but some areas like Monmartre, St Michel and St Severin near the Notredame are pretty cheap

that depend where in Paris you are, you can eat for cheap and for the shop you can find cheap boutiques as very expensive (but in the great quarters)

You can save some money on dining by eating at bistros instead of 5 star tourist trap restaurants.  Real French ppl eat at the bistros.  You can also save money, but still have a good time by buying groceries (many of the grocery stores have a deli section) and buying pastries at patisseries (bakeries specializing in delicious pastries) instead of eating out every meal.  If the menu of the restaurant says "Service compris" that means "tip included" and NO extra tipping is needed (only tourists would tip extra.  Sorry French waiters!).  If they add on an 18% service charge, that is the tip so no need to tip extra (no French ppl do).  By law, if you order food at a restaurant, they MUST provide you tap water free of charge ("Un carafe d'eau, s'il vous plait"-- A carafe of water please).  Shopping is expensive and many French ppl come to the US to buy clothes.  If you see something you like, you can still buy it, but it won't be cheap.  You can get a refund of the TVA (value added tax in English) from some stores though some stores have a miniumum purchase.  The TVA (VAT in English) can be up to 17% (a 17% sales tax).  The tax is HIDDEN bc it is included in the price tag but it is often refundable if the item is taken out of the country (I assume that you are from the US or Canada).  The stores will provide the paperwork and you have to get the paperwork stamped (rubberstamped) by the customs officials in France before you board the airplane home.  It sounds like a hassle, but it's like anything else in life-- don't panic, just fill out the papers and you can save some money and French law allows you to do it.

i dont quite no much about the value of money. when i went to paris they were still using the francs. but it was pretty expensive. some were alrite but paris is a touristy place and they no it. things can get pricey. you just gotta no where to go.
