I have a special project that I would like to stain and lacquer with the very best possible finishes. I would like to know the names of them, where to get them and the best application method possible. The wood is Aspen from Colorado and I only need a small amount. Thank you so much ahead of time.

  1. Does it have to be laquer? That is a specific type of finish and is not the most durable. For a special project with a high gloss I would use McCloskey's Man o' War  Ultra Spar. Very high gloss and extremely durable. This is what I used 25 yr. ago on a rocking chair for my wife. Four kids later still looks great ( the chair and the wife ). Small scratches can be rubbed out. It is also my first choice for outdoor use. It is also used on boats because of its durability and resistance to weather.

Edit: Did not mention stain. Any brand should be fine. Keep in mind that Aspen is fairly soft and absorbs stain readily.  The sample pieces that they will have where you but the stain may be on several woods but probably not Aspen, consider the color on the softer woods.

  2. Minwax is a good stain if you're wanting something darker.  If you really want to accent the natural color of the wood however, linseed oil is one of the best.  as far as "clear coats" for a high gloss, I've had really good luck with minwax polyeurothane, and (don't be afraid) Mother's automotive wax.  If you do go with paste wax, you'll be looking at many coats to get a good smooth finish.  If you're a "first timer" thin out the Minwax Polyeruothane clear coat half and half with paint thinner, and put on 4-6 coats with a natrual fiber fine bristle brush (I'm talking high gloss).  If you're just wanting a good thick glossy protective coating, don't bother thinning it, just use a soft brush and make sure you "cross strokes" and don't be shy when applying.  High gloss is all about excess, semi-gloss is the hardest to get a "good" lasting coat of.  If you have more questions about this one, feel free to get ahold of me, finishing woodwork really is it's own fine art.

  3.     Max..... has a good answer but, I also spray everything now. I have several type of gravity and, pressure sprayers and they give a finish that goes without saying.
