  1. Boggle

  2. I think Scrabble.

  3. scrabble by miles

  4. crosswords are also good.......

  5. Any exercise that gets you to use words in context improves vocabulary. Because of this no game fits your critiria. Games only test your ability to recall words not use them. I enjoy word games (Quiddler, Montage, Knock-on-word! to name some obscure ones) but I've never really learned anything from them. BTW, the 2003 World Scrabble champion was from Tailand and didn't speak English fluently.

  6. "Lawyers", a game I just invented for this question. You select a person facing trial who you know to be guilty and the player with the most points wins as the lawyer who successfully argues for the innocence of his/her client. Traps and pitfalls abound as the player must increasingly need eloquent arguments with infallible logic and be occasionally be subjected to written questions from the opposing players. A board game for four. The use of a Thesaurus is permitted and encouraged.

  7. I would say boggle, but the trick to using it to broaden your vocabulary is looking for weird words you don't really know about. This is best accompanied by a dictionary to look up words. you can also play this really cool game were you take a word and mix up the letters in it to create a new word but you can only use the letters as many times as they appear in a word. EXP.(using the word INTERNET you can make words like... net, enter I, tent.) but the best way to broaden your vocab. is to read really good books and when you don't know a word don't skip over it look it up.

  8. Beyond any reasonable doubt:  Scrabble.  Not only is it most excellent for spelling and vocabulary, it also keeps the dendrites connected!!!

  9. crosswords and scrabble....these r the bst..

  10. Ebonics!

  11. Eye Spy with my little Eye, something beginning with....

  12. a word search and maybe A DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS

  13. Scrabble is really good...especially if you play the computer game.  Whenever you or the computer plays a word, they have a feature where you can look up the definition.  It's really good.  I'm also in the process of learning to play My Word Coach for Wii...I'm a spaz with the remote but it seems to be really educational.

  14. hangman

  15. I think Balderdash! I would do these with my English class and it got them thinking about words. I used to also give them word searches and have them write out ten definitions and sentences using the words from the dictionary.

EDIT: I noticed that one of the other responders said "Apples to Apples," , and I also played this with the class. The kids absolutely loved it. It is also an excellent vocabulary game.

  16. Those are both great games for vocab improvement as well as crosswords (although they can sometimes be repetitive). On Yahoo Games there is a whole word game section that is great-- I particularly like Text Twist.

There is a game called Apples to Apples which is a fun way to learn some new words. It also helps with interpreting words in different ways and it can be a lot of fun. There is a junior version if you are looking for a game for kids.

  17. scrabble

even if you're like not playing and just watching other people play...i use to watch my parents and older brother play when i was little and couldn't spell good enough yet and now i play when ever i can my vocab is pretty d**n good

plus with scrabble they have all these like books to help you just learn words that are up to 7 letters...my dad has like 4 lol

  18. Don't forget Password.

  19. Good question!   I'm not sure the answer lies only in games, but in reading very widely, and in being curious about words one has not come across before.  If I hear a new word I always want to know what it means, how it is spelt (spelled?), where it originated etc.  But, then, I am pretty weird, so there you have it!

I like inventing new meanings for words to make people laugh.  Like OXYMORON!   I always say it means a hyperventilating idiot!  etc.!

I also like playing with dog Latin, like NON SEQUITUR means 'sorry about your roses' etc.!

  20. Games like Scrabble and Boggle are fun, but don't really improve your vocabulary. Try crossword puzzles

  21. The internet games on Yahoo are great ;-) I love Text Twist. It keeps me on my toes, and I have to dip into my vocabulary to remember words that I have forgotten since graduating from school. Thank God I read books on a daily basis, it definitely keeps my vocabulary fine tuned.
