What is the video format for VCR-recorded DVD?

Question

After using DVD player to copy one of my old VCR tape to a DVD disc. I found that I can watch it on a windows media player and Realplayer. What's the video format resulted in this case? I want to know this for editing.

.vob It's a very specific form of mpeg2. That's not the best way to import video into a computer.
