What is the vivid green, vaguely-mango-shaped fruit that is covered with green spikes....?

What is the vivid green, vaguely-mango-shaped "fruit" that is covered with green spikes that grows in the south-facing canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains in S. California? We saw some up in Big Santa Anita Canyon today. They grow from a plant that looks either like a pea plant or a grapevine. (I put quotes around fruit as I suspect that's what it is, but I'm not sure!)
