You can also the a bus from Stazione San Pietro to Piazza Venezia and the walk from there, is very close. The bus / route number is 64.

Three miles.  Or, catch the Metro subway at the Colleseum, switch to the other Metro at Termini station and take it right to the Vatican.

Not too far to walk, but too much to see in one day.  The Vatican can take 3/4 of a day.  You have the vatican itself, the crypt underneath (don't miss) and you can wait to climb into the dome.  Then there is the vatican museum (don't miss)  because thats where the Sistine chapel is, from there walk to Castel Angelo (sp).  

Next day do ancient Rome, Colloseum (sp), and the attached area Forum/Circus, then walk to the  Pantheon.

I've walked it on many occassions. You will not notice the distance as you walk.

If you like walking (and you have time), it is not too far to walk.  I was there in January, so it was cold but it was still a beautiful walk. Every time I turned a corner there was an amazing building or bridge, or piazza.  There are a few sign post and I just kept walking in the same direction the sign said until I saw another one to turn.  I think it took me about 30-40 minutes.  But I love to walk and especially in  a beautiful city like Rome.

Considering the Venice Plaza as the center of the city, the Vatican is about 5 km., but you can walk, because you'll see a lot of beauties on your road. From the same place(Venice Plaza or Il Vittoriano) is closer, just 1 km.
