What is the water in water towers used for?

You know when you’re driving down the highway and you see those water towers spread about seemingly randomly on the sides of the highway? Well, what are they used for? It seems like they would not be able to hold a sufficient amount of water to support a city during a drought and normally I do not see them around any farm land, so they are not for crops. What is the water inside them used for?

  1. it builds up the water pressure in houses and it there just in case your city runs out some how lol. hope i helped!

  2. The water towers hold water to service residential usage. The tower only holds a small portion of the water supply, maybe a couple days worth. The tower gives a constant outlet pressure to the system. It can also be filled 24 hours a day (if needed), so the pumping costs of delivering the water is lessened (they can use smaller pumps instead of having to bring on several pumps during peak output times).

  3. That is the water you drink out of the tap.

  4. *Many water towers were constructed during the Industrial Revolution; some are now considered architectural landmarks and monuments, and may not be demolished. Some are converted to apartments or exclusive penthouses.

*In certain areas, such as New York City, smaller water towers are constructed for individual buildings.

  5. Water towers store a quantity of water at an elevation (height), water generates approximately 1/2 psi  per foot of elevation.   The pressure generated by the height of the water is what pressurizes teh water system (tap pressure). Water pumps are used to refill the water towers and keep the water level within an operating range in the tower.

The volume of water in the towers provides surge capacity that a pump alone would not be able to handle.

  6. Emergency water.

You are so smart, do you answer/ask questions anywhere else? IT would be so cool if you had youtube videos with you and your wife talking about stuff ( i think you said you were married) my husband and I have silly ones where we dance, nothing impressive. Anyway, keep pondering, Cheers!

  7. Domestic usage. The towers are there to provide water pressure without requiring a pump continuously running. Their supply is replenished by having new water pumped up when the level inside drops too low.

  8. it's allows in the highest  point in the city to make the maximum pressure  of water

  9. LOL good question..i always wondered..

  10. The city pumps water up into the towers.  The water then is piped to your home, office, etc.  You use it to cook, drink, shower, etc.

The height of the tower gives you increased pressure.

The volume of the tank is to meet peak demand without too great a drop of pressure.
