Coming from a warm climate (OZ) even mild winters, I know I need a coat but in general what is usual street wear for the area? Do I need snow boots? Many woolly jumpers? How cold does it get at night? During the day? I know its a lame question but need to know before I leave to pack or where is a good place to buy in Normandy? Sorry but we dont get that cold here. Is it a high wind chill factor? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks M

  1. the same than all the year, the weather is always inclement in Normandy

  2. Cold, probably rainy or overcast. It is very green if that can give you an idea of the average rainfall.

The Atlantic coast never gets as cold as the rest of the country in winter because of the influence of the Gulf stream current but the wind factor could make it seem colder than it is and if you come from a warm climate, then yes, you will definitely find it cold.

Snow boots will not be necessary (even it it snowed, it wouldn't be more than an inch) but sweaters, scarf, hat and a coat that is a good wind breaker. Good waterproof shoes.

  3. Average high temperature is 7 degrees celsius/44 degrees farenheit, and the average low is 2 celsius, 36 farenheit. There are, on average, four days with snow in January.

Normandy is surrounded by the sea on three sides and subject to cold, damp winds blowing off the channel in winter.

I suspect that this is far colder and wetter than you are used to. Good, water resistent footwear is a must as is a proper all weather overcoat.
