  1. The Cancun area is quite hot and humid during the summer months. I therefore recommend that you consider taking a lot of tours that will have you in the water. Everything from snorkeling at reefs, swim with dolphins and a tour that is only offered during the summer months, swim with whale sharks:

Other tours to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, are wonderful, but you should consider the option of a visit to Tulum instead. This is because Chichen Itza, while a spectacular site, is located inland. It gets quite hot during the summer months and you should go there another time, if you plan to return to the area in the future. Tulum is located on cliffs above the Caribbean Sea, and has a smaller area to see and a beach to take a dip if you get too hot. The other half of the day is spent at an area eco park. I recommend you choose the park of Xel-Ha and get the all-inclusive plan as it will save you a lot of time and money. The other park in the area is Xcaret, which I would save for its own day because it is too large to see in just a half day. Here is a list of great tours and you should compare prices and read the fine print. Most local companies offer rescheduling policies and cancelations as well, something you will not find at the resorts:

  2. Not enough to spoil your vacation.

Check the weather advisories shortly before you go and if there are any storms with names headed your way.  Take advantage of your cancellation insurance

  3. The weather in Cancun is fantastic all through the year, with daytime temperatures never far away from 30°C / 86°F.

    Cancun  in July 32°C / 90°F

    Cancun  in August 32°C / 90°F

(mY Opinion any season is good in Cancun

  4. July and August are hot and muggy in Mexico in general. However, Cancun does benefit from the breezes right off the water so it is more pleasant that places inland. You should expect some rain. This is hurricane season as well.

What the weather will be like this summer is impossible to know now. I have been in Mexico in August when it is nice and there are no storms and I have been there during and immediately after a storm. You will just have no way of knowing until closer to time. Even then, the weather can change very rapidly. Definitely invest in travel insurance and see what the prize package says about weather issues.

Even when the days are overcast, make sure to wear sunscreen. You are closer to the equator and the sun is stronger there. You don't want to have to spend time inside because you are burnt to a crisp. A hat and sunglasses will help protect your delicate eye skin as well.

If you leave the main area of Cancun make sure to take some bug spray with you. While less annoying than other Central and South American countries, the no see ums can still be a pain.

Regardless, when you are there, make sure to see the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum. They are definitely worth the trip. Both are an easy tour bus ride from Cancun. So is XelHa and Xcaret. Isla Mujeres also makes a nice trip and has some good snorkeling off the shores.

Also, check out the Mexican Fire Opals if you are looking for a neat and different piece of jewelry. The Amethysts are very reasonably priced also.

Finally, take bottled water with you when you leave your hotel to explore each day. You do not want to get caught without and end up dehydrated. In some areas, water can be hard to locate. If you stay in the tourist areas, you should be fine but you will also pay a premium for the water.
