  1. It is the hottest, most crowded month.  I liked it there in May!  Stay in Fiesole which overlooks Florence.  Bus 7 takes you between Fiesole and the train station, with stops at convenient sightseeing places.  A multi-day bus ticket is very cheap!

  2. It's hot, humid hot. If you are going, try to visit the city during morning or late afternoon, when the sun isn't that strong. Wear light clear colored clothes and drink a lot (a fruit gelato will also do the trick).

However, Italian metereologists said that this year's summer will not be crazy hot like last few years.

  3. According to 'Pan Am's World Guide', the average high temperature for Rome in July is 88 degrees F. and the average for August also is 88 degrees F.  The average low is 64 degrees F. for July as well as August.  Rome receives an average of 29 days without rain in July and 28 days without rain in August.  You can expect temperatures and weather conditions in Florence to be roughly the same if not a bit warmer, since Florence is further inland than Rome, even if it is further north.  The temperature may reach 100 degrees F. or slightly higher.  The climate is also very arid.

It is important to keep in mind that temperatures vary from year to year.

  4. july is the hottest month in italy.

  5. Typically it is hot.  Like, miserably hot.  I have several friends who live there year round except for the summer.  They move to a summer home away from the city.  Florence becomes very congested with tourists- which only adds to the feeling of stuffiness and miserable heat.

Florence is located inland so the city does not have the benefit of a coastal breeze as does Rome.  Though Rome also gets very hot there is at least a little bit of moving air.

All that being said, it is all relative.  I am originally from Virginia in the US, which gets incredibly hot with outrageously humid days.  I am used to feeling incredibly hot and sticky in the summer so for me it is annoying but not impossible.  Depending on where you are coming from, if you are visiting you might feel the same way.

A/C is not a standard feature, so be prepared to be hot! And be prepared for the mosquitoes!
