  1. This comes from Buddhism.  Voidism.  The concept is to attain the stage of nothingness.  The stage in which an individual will be able to think of absolutely nothing, which is impossible.  If they will be able to think of nothing, they're still thinking that they're thinking of nothing.  Get it??

What Gavin R said is partially true.  As we all know, hinduism has so many branches as there are many demigods and goddesses.  When Sankaracarya appeared,  he propagated the mayavadi philosophy.  That is Impersonalism.  It is just like the same with Buddhism, just presented in a different way.  In Buddhism, the goal is voidism while in Impersonalism, it's Brahman.  It is what Gavin said to be the Unlimited Self.  It is just like you're in a dark room, all in darkness, you can see no light.  Absolutely nothing.  Just dakness.  Then, in impersonalism, you're in the same room but this time, it is already full of lights.  Lights everywhere.! No shadows.  But still, there is nothing.  Just brightness.  See the difference?

In Buddhism, they believe that a person's sufferings are caused by oneself.  The person desires, then, the person contemplates in it, then, the person strives very hard to attain it, then, when there are obstacles,  and not be able to attain that goal/desire, the person becomes frustrated.  He becomes miserable....

Actually, you may see that people suffer because they want to attain something.  So, when they are able to think of nothing or shift their awareness to nothingness, they stop desiring, then, there would be no more suffering.  No activity. (But they'll still be doing a thing : thinking of some thing and that is that nothing.)

In Impersonalism,  the goal is to be one with that Brahman / Unlimited Light/Self.  The concept is quite the same with that of Buddhism.

  2. It is as the ying and yang.  Completeness on one hand, nothingness on the other.

"Being" lies somewhere in the middle, generally.

    "Completeness"..."Being"..."Nothingnes...

It is easier to envision nothingness, so we do this as a way to frame...to eventually approach...completeness.

  3. In some Eastern philosophies, the concept of "nothingness" is characterized by an egoless state of being in which one fully realizes their own small part in the cosmos.

  4. This is a misinterpretation of what the Buddha meant as 'Void'.  It is often mistaken for nothingness.  Seekers arrive at the point of 'Void' and rarely pass through it because of the confusion with nothingness.

Nothingness is an impossibility that the ego has trouble resolving.  The ego brings up the 'last duality' of existence vs. nonexistence which is people commonly fall for.  The universe is inclusive of all that exist, not that which doesn't.  How can one experience or have 'nothingness'?  It is not anywhere in the universe.  Someone would have to experience nothingness and report to other that it exist; then how would nothingness exist if there is someone there to experience it.

What the Buddha meant by 'Void' is the experience of consciousness devoid of all content.  This is because the Buddha transcended the ego/mind which is fixated on the content of the universe rather than the context.  Self is the ultimate context devoided of content.  The Oneness of Self is so complete that any separations are considered illusions of the the unawakened mind.

Dr. David R. Hawkins explains this meaning well in his books titled "I" and in "Transcending Levels of Consciousness" and "Devotional Nonduality."

  5. I have no idea---are you high?

  6. That sounds like meditation to me.

I think the idea is that you block out everything that comes into your mind and just focus on your breathing, a piece of music,or a phrase etc. Everything outside of this one thing just melts away and seams meaningless. You will feel relaxed, in controll, and appreciate how beautiful and complex the simplest elements of life are.

  7. This comes from Hinduism.  They mean the cosmic Void, which is fairly difficult to define. I think it is a metaphor for perfect silence.

Becoming Unlimited Self means transcending your personality to surrender it to the All. The Unlimited Self is not bound by space or time, by natural laws or by conventional mores.

  9. Wow. Some ppl take religion too seriously. Heres the layman answer for you, without the stigma of self proclaimed dogmatic nonsense.

Cling to nothing and accomplish self awareness. Its much simple than we make ourselves imagine it to be. Just let go, it all comes together.
