  1. I read somewhere that "furries" are people who are attracted to animals somehow...they often dress as animals before intercourse, like role-playing...wish I could find the site again.

It struck me as a little odd, too.

I hope that clarifies things, but probably not.

  2. The whole idea of "furries" originated with Aesop's Fables, in which human moral characteristics were projected onto animals, in order to teach a lesson, even though adults know that this is a stretch of the imagination, children find it especially compelling, and cartoons in general, thrive on this type of depiction...

  3. The "Furies" were ancient goddesses to the Greeks that controlled the weather, the seasons etc. I believe there are eleven of them.

  4. "Furries" are fans of anthropomorphic animal characters.  Typically involving cute, fuzzy animals as opposed to something ugly or creepy (like naked mole rats).  The core idea of anthropomorphicism is that one takes something, anything, and projects the concept of that object or animal somehow having human-like qualities.  Anything from human speech and emotions, to the shape appearing to be a human face, or what have you.

As such, since the beginning of time, there have been writers who would explore this concept, and write stories about animals with human-like characteristics, including the Egyptians, Native Americans, Incas, Mayans, Chinese, Japanese....just about anywhere.  When we have an animal around us, we try to understand it, get to know it much as we would a human friend around us.  This is how we figure out that our cat is saying "FEED me, dammit!" or that a dog is demanding a walk.

So, as such, there's the most modern incarnation of this effect.  That is, anthro fans, or "furries" such as people call them.  Most are akin to the writsers and artists of old, who simply draw and write about anthropomorphic cats, dogs, and the like because they find them interesting as characters.  Nothing sexual is projected upon these characters, more than would be any other human being.

However, this IS the Internet, so of course all parts of society get equal viewing time and access, including and especially the dark underbelly of any group.  In the case of Furries, that minority group is all the sexual fetishists.  It bears pointing out, that these people also exist in the same frequency in ANY group.  More or less, these are people who take the concept of anthropomorphicisation alittle TOO far, and since they themselves will hump anything that moves (and a bundle that don't), assume that all their characters, all of everyone else's characters, every thing, creature and person in the world, is just like THEM.  Most of these folks are more hormones than brains, and alot of people (Furries included) wish they'd go away.

  5. Do you mean the people who like dressing as animals, and they have conventions and such? An outgrowth of science fiction fandom.
